Meniscal cyst

Case contributed by Dr Varun Babu

Clinician sent the patient through for an MRI suspecting a lateral meniscal tear.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male

Horizontal tear of posterior horn of medial meniscus dividing the horn into an upper and lower portion. A 11 mm cyst is seen posterior to the torn meniscus abutting it.

Case Discussion

No clear communication seen between cyst and tear. Features are suggestive of a possible parameniscal cyst. MRI is useful specially for detection of posterior para meniscal cysts which are difficult to identify in arthroscopy.
