Plain x-ray (frontal and oblique views) show fractures of the shaft of 4th metacarpal and neck of 5th metacarpal with a volar tilt. The latter is also known as the Boxer fracture.
Case Discussion
Boxer fracture, a fracture of the neck of the 5th metacarpal, is one of the most common metacarpal fractures. Although named for the mechanism by which they are thought to occur (i.e., punching someone or something with a closed fist), they can occur from other causes of trauma too, as this case aptly demonstrates.
