Metacarpal neck fracture

Presentation

Fell off a bicycle. Considerable inflammation and pain most over MC II and III.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Transverse slightly displaced and impacted fracture involving the 2nd metacarpal neck. No intra-articular extension is seen.

Case Discussion

Metacarpal fractures are common and account for 10% of all fractures and 40% of all hand fractures. The metacarpal shaft and neck fractures are usually a result of axial loading or direct trauma (clenched fist and solid surface); torsional force may also result in this type of injury.
