Presentation

Soft tissue mass in forearm ? neoplasm. Sheet metal worker.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male

MRI forearm

Skin marker (vitamin E capsule) placed over soft tissue lump. Gross metallic artefact at the marked site of the soft tissue mass. Marked distortion of the image as a result of metallic artifact.

XR performed after the MRI

x-ray

Note soft-tissue swelling and metallic ring in the subcutaneous tissues.

The patient had no knowledge of penetrating injury!

Case Discussion

Although relatively uncommon, foreign body reaction needs to be considered when patients present with 'lumps and bumps'. This case again illustrates that it is crucial to have plain radiographs if MRI images of the muscoloskeletal system are to be correctly interpreted.
