Metaplastic carcinoma left breast

Case contributed by Dr Garth Kruger

A 70 year old female is sent for diagnostic breast imaging. Palpable mass lesion left breast.

Patient Data

Age: 70
Gender: Female
Modality: Mammography

Note on the mammogram how the upper outer quadrant dense lesion is smoothly well defined on the CC view but has slightly spiculated margins on the MLO view.

Modality: Ultrasound

Case Discussion

Histology shows a metaplastic carcinoma.

This alternating appearance of spiculation between the CC and MLO views may even be seen on a single image and is apparently highly suggestive of a metaplastic carcinoma.
