Diffuse and large areas of low attenuation in cerebral white matter and bilateral basal ganglia (putamina)

Case Discussion

The radiological features are typical for methanol poisoning with characteristic areas of low attenuation involving the basal ganglia (putamina) and the cerebral white matter.

Upon further questioning, the patient's family reported that he is an alcoholic with recent methanol uptake.

Methanol poisoning is a cause of an acute toxic leukoencephalopathy that also has eventual chronic sequelae.
