Mid esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

Presentation

Progressive dysphagia and weight loss

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Female

Increased wall thickness due to tumoral infiltration is present at midesophagus measuring about 5 cm in length. There are no sign of local invasion to adjacent structures and no regional lymphadenopathy.
An 8 mm subpleural nodule is present at posterobasal segment of right lower lobe. 

A 25 mm simple cortical cyst is noted at lower pole of right kidney. 
Degenerative changes as osteophytosis are seen at the thoracolumbar spine.

Post chemotherapy control MRI

Mild increased wall thickness is noted at middle third of esophagus. There is no sign of vascular and obvious tracheobronchial invasion.

Partial response.

Case Discussion

Pathology proven mid esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.
The incidence of the subtypes shows regional variation and the squamous cell subtype has the greatest worldwide incidence (~90%).
Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma staging has important implications for treatment strategy.
