Middle meningeal artery originating from ophthalmic artery

Case contributed by Assoc Prof Frank Gaillard

The middle meningeal artery can be see arising from the ophthalmic artery at the orbital apex.

Case Discussion

This is an important anatomical variant, but not as important as the opposite which can also occur, namely the ophthalmic artery arising from the middle meningeal artery. In such cases embolization of the latter can inadvertently result in blindness.
