Midgut volvulus with small bowel obstruction

Presentation

Elderly male presented with intestinal colic and bilious vomiting.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Male

Distended stomach, duodenum, jejunum and ileum till its distal segment displaying multiple air fluid levels signifies bowel obstruction. There is adjacent mesentery appears twisted along with vessels and ileal loop depicting 'whirlpool sign' suggestive of midgut volvulus. Bowel distal to the volvulus appears collapsed.

Case Discussion

Mesenteric volvulus is a surgical emergency and early diagnosis management can prevent the impending bowel ischemia.
