Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

Avulsion fracture of the anterior process of the calcaneum. Thickening, hypoechogenicity of the lateral fibers of the dorsal talonavicular ligament. Normal echopattern of the medial fibers of the dorsal talonavicular ligament. Normal echopattern of the anterior-inferior tibiofibular ligament, anterior talofibular ligament, and calcaneofibular ligament. Minimal fluid in the ankle joint anterior recess.

Case Discussion

The patient had an ankle twist followed by pain and swelling involving the foot dorsum. An initial radiograph (not uploaded, no copyright) revealed a possible avulsion fracture of the anterior calcaneal process. Ultrasound shows calcaneal avulsion fracture along with dorsal talonavicular ligament sprain.
