Miliary tuberculosis

Case contributed by Dr Nolan Walker

Renal transplant patient. Right basal crackles were heard on auscultation. Pyrexial ?cause.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

Subtle but definite miliary nodules throughout both lungs. These are most noticeable in the right lower zone.

Axial MIP images of the CT chest performed 2 days later confirms the miliary nodules.

Case Discussion

The nodules are visible on the CXR but they can be missed if you are not specifically looking for them.

Following the chest x-ray, the patient deteriorated rapidly and they were admitted to ICU. CT MIP imaging reveals the nodules far more clearly.
