Presentation

Elderly patient under the care of the cardiologists, admitted with acute on chronic shortness of breath.

Patient Data

Age: 80 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Many of the features of mitral stenosis are present:

a. A splayed subcarinal angle

b. A double right heart border

c. Cardiomegaly

 

Case Discussion

Mitral stenosis is less commonly seen in contemporary medicine, due to a reduced incidence of rheumatic fever.

Historically this has been the commonest cause of mitral stenosis.
