Mobile caecum

Case contributed by Dr Roberto Schubert

Long-standing lower abdominal pain. Ultrasound showed no abnormalities.

Patient Data

Age: 50
Gender: Female

The caecal pole reaches deep into the true pelvis and indents the urinary bladder.

Case Discussion

Abnormal mobility of the caecum and the lower ascending colon due to incomplete rotation of the hindgut and its incomplete fixation to the retroperitoneum is a common problem in paediatric surgery. It is rarely encountered in adults.
