Morgagni diaphragmatic hernia

Case contributed by Dr Victoria Ho

Presented with ten days history of coryzal symptoms with high fever.

Patient Data

Age: 1 year

Gas filled viscus within the anterior left hemithorax extends superiorly to the level of the hilum, consistent with a loop of bowel through a Morgagni diaphragmatic hernia.

Right lower zone airspace opacity consistent with pneumonia.

Case Discussion

Diaphragmatic hernias may be detected on routine prenatal ultrasound.

If not diagnosed in utero, diaphragmatic hernia should be considered in infants presented with respiratory distress.

Herniation is more common on the left side, with chest x-ray showing abdominal content in the hemithorax.
