Morphological classification of sacrococcygeal teratomas (American Academy of Pediatrics Surgery Section Survey):

  • type 1: entirely extra-fetal, with or without a small presacral component (accounts for the majority of cases)

  • type 2: extra-fetal with intrapelvic extension

  • type 3: extra-fetal with extension through the pelvis into the abdomen

  • type 4: entirely intra-fetal without any external component
