Presentation
The patient presented with recent onset weight loss and abdominal distension.
Patient Data
Non-contrast and post-contrast CT images (axial views) show large solid and cystic masses in the adnexa. The solid component of the masses show heterogeneous enhancement. The ovaries are not separately visualized.
There are two hypoenhancing lesions in segments VI and VIII of the liver and an enhancing soft tissue lesion along the posterior aspect of uterus, consistent with metastatic deposits.
Large volume ascites is present.
An ultrasound-guided percutaneous biopsy of the adnexal mass and fine needle aspiration cytology of the liver lesion were performed, which revealed mucinous cystadenocarcinoma and hepatic metastasis respectively.
Case Discussion
Mucinous neoplasms account for approximately 10 per cent of all ovarian neoplasms and may be divided into benign, borderline, and malignant groups. Benign tumors tend to occur in younger age groups while borderline and malignant tumors are seen in middle aged and older women.
On cross-sectional imaging, malignant mucinous neoplasms are seen as complex solid-cystic masses with thick irregular walls and large heterogeneously enhancing soft tissue component (due to necrosis). Ascites is usually present.
