Variable-sized multiple cysts diffusely involving the cerebral cortex and white matter in the supratentorial brain with relative sparing of the infratentorial brain.
Generalized cerebral atrophic changes in the supratentorial brain are noted with ex vacuao dilatation of the ventricles.
Case Discussion
Perinatal asphyxia which may result either in utero or postnatally, is the single most important cause of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy as a consequence of global hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. Multicystic encephalomalacia is the long term sequelae of this profound ischemic brain insult.
