Reduced volume of both cerebral hemispheres with multi-cystic areas of various sizes seen within the cortex and white matter.
Dilated supra-tentorial ventricular system and atrophy of the corpus callosum. Basal ganlia and posterior fossa are preserved.
Case Discussion
Multicystic encephalomalacia is a sequela of a diffuse brain ischemic insult as in this case. The cysts resulting from the destruction of the cerebral white matter and the linear septae represent glial cells with some viable neurons.
