Multipartite patella

Case contributed by Dr Tim Luijkx

Presentation

Previous medial compartment osteochondral defect.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male
X-ray

Incidental finding of a multipartite patella, in this case three additional ossification centers in the superlateral patella.

MRI

MRI 18 months earlier

High PD fat sat signal suggestive of friction between the fragments. In the right clinical context this could support a diagnosis of symptomatic friction.

Case Discussion

The superolateral patella is the typical location for normal variation of additional ossification centers, normally only two. Rounded, corticated appearance further favors a normal variant over comminuted fracture.
