Multiple ingested foreign bodies

Ingested objects at home.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Female

Ten AA batteries project over the abdomen; 3 in the stomach, 5 along with a key in the ascending colon and 2 in the descending colon.

Underwire brassiere remains in situ.


One day later

Three batteries remain in the stomach.   The 5 batteries and key have migrated from the ascending colon to the transverse colon.

The 2 batteries in the descending colon now lie in the sigmoid colon.

Case Discussion

Foreign body ingestion is a common occurrence.  The items and number vary greatly.

Some of the more commonly ingested objects are; coins, batteries and paper clips.
