Presentation
A weight lifter with painful palpable protruding posterior thigh swelling
Patient Data
A myofascial defect is noted at mid biceps femoris muscle (shown between arrows). The muscle appears to herniate through the defect to form a sac like protrusion.
Case Discussion
This is a case of muscle hernia (also referred to as a myofascial defect). Muscle hernias occur when there is a defect in the fascial sheath of a muscle.
High-resolution ultrasound is the first-line imaging modality of choice for suspected muscle herniation. MRI may be necessary if other differentials such as benign or malignant soft tissue masses are in question.
