Presentation
Weakness of the lower limbs
Patient Data
There is an intramedullary lesion of central location within the conus medullaris at the level of T10-T12, displacing the nerve roots of the cauda equina. The lesion is composed of small cystic areas of low signal on T1 and T2, and a solid component of isosignal to the cord on T1, iso-to high signal on T2 with heterogeneous enhancement on postcontrast sequences. An area of vasogenic edema is noted above the lesion. Mild posterior vertebral scalloping at T11 with no bony destruction.
Case Discussion
MRI features of a spinal cord tumor centered on the conus medullaris; probably a myxopapillary ependymoma
Myxopapillary ependymoma is considered as a variant type of ependymoma, and the most common tumors of the cauda equina and/or conus medullaris region.
