Nasogastric tube positioning

Case contributed by Dr Derek Smith

Presentation

Patient with cerebral palsy and development deficiency requiring enteral feeding.

Patient Data

Age: 40
Gender: Female
X-ray

This radiograph shows a nasogastric tube that if retracted slightly could be suitable for feeding.  Also likely basal pneumonia.

Case Discussion

This patient has a NG tube that will be safe for feeding.  If retracted slightly, will definitely be in the stomach rather than antrum/?duodenal.  Developing pneumonia which in this case is probably caused by aspiration.
