Necrotic pneumonia with empyema and lung necrosis

Case contributed by Dr Jeremy Jones
Modality: X-ray

Moderate sized left effusion with underlying consolidation. Notice the contralateral mediastinal shift suggesting that there is not a significant amount of collapse.

Modality: Ultrasound

Collapse/consolidation with air-bronchograms. Inferiorly, there is a parenchymal hyperechoic region consistent with an area of lung necrosis and an accompanying effusion.

Case Discussion

This case demonstrates two complications of pneumonia in children, namely effusion formation (and empyema) and lung necrosis - the latter of which is much rarer.
