Necrotising enterocolitis

Case contributed by Dr Hani Salam

Abdominal distention.

Patient Data

Age: 6 days

Case Discussion

US of the abdomen demonstrates echogenic thickened bowel loops with average thickness of 2.4 mm. Free intraperitoneal fluid is seen around the liver as well as the pelvic cavity with echogenic debris. The features are suggestive of necrotising enterocolitis complicated by bowel perforation, which was confirmed by complimentary plain radiograph of the abdomen.
