Presentation

Abdominal distention.

Patient Data

Age: 6 days
Gender: Male
ultrasound

US of the abdomen demonstrates echogenic thickened bowel loops with an average thickness of 2.5 mm. Free intraperitoneal fluid is seen around the liver as well as the pelvic cavity with echogenic debris.

x-ray

Central gas-filled small bowel. Well-defined right paramedian gaseous lucency over the liver with a linear band adjacent to the UVC. Appearances are of pneumoperitoneum outlining the falciform ligament.

UVC and UAC position is appropriate.

Case Discussion

The features are suggestive of necrotizing enterocolitis complicated by bowel perforation, which was confirmed by complementary plain radiograph of the abdomen.
