Presentation

Chief complaint: Presented for wound dressing as he fell 2 weeks back while walking and landed on his left side, the patient was treated in a private clinic for the last 2 weeks. On clinical examination: two big ulcer wounds with infection and swelling at the lateral side of the left knee and the upper end of the left leg. Past medical history: Diabetes mellitus on medication.

Gender: Male

No clear fracture or bony lesion is noted.

Soft-tissue gas is seen at the lateral aspect of the left knee along the fascial planes on the radiograph.

Necrotizing fasciitis refers to a rapidly progressive and often fatal aggressive necrotizing soft tissue infection primarily involving and spreading along the fascia.

MRI is the gold standard imaging modality for the investigation of necrotizing fasciitis with a sensitivity of 93%.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a surgical emergency.
