Neonatal pneumothorax

Case contributed by Jeremy Jones
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Admitted with respiratory distress.

Patient Data

Age: 5 days
Gender: Male
x-ray

Bilateral peribronchial thickening and a small right sided pneumothorax.

Case Discussion

There is bilateral peribronchial thickening, but don't be fooled into thinking that's the main cause of respiratory distress and diagnose bronchiolitis - there's a right sided pneumothorax which is more likely to be the cause of the symptoms and signs and certainly needs to be observed.
