Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome

Case contributed by Jeremy Jones
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

29 week gestation infant. Day 0. Respiratory distress from birth.

Patient Data

Age: 0 days
Gender: Male

Widespread background granular appearance. Given the gestation, appearances here are of neonatal RDS.

The lung are well expanded, but this is secondary to non-invasive ventilation. Distension of the upper airway is in keeping with CPAP.

Non-invasive ventilation has been replaced by intubation. However, the tip of the tube is now in the right main bronchus and should be pulled back.

Case Discussion

Classic features of neonatal RDS. Additional features of upper airway distension secondary to non-invasive ventilation and then right main bronchus intubation following ET tube placement.
