Neurofibromatosis type 1 - with optic glioma

Bilateral decreased visual acuity and nystagmus

Patient Data

Age: 4 years
Gender: Male

Brain MRI with contrast

Bilateral optic pathway enlargement.

Right fusiform enlargement of optic tract just in the optic foramen, up to optic chiasma with homogeneous enhancement after contrast injection.

Left optic nerve enlargement in retrobulbar space with mild enhancement after contrast administration.

Case Discussion

This is a known case of neurofibromatosis type1 with bilateral optic pathway glioma.

The main differential is optic nerve meningioma. The presence of calcification in meningioma may help differentiate it from an optic nerve glioma 1.
