Presentation

SOTOS syndrome and severe scoliosis. Pre-op assessment.

Patient Data

Age: 7 years
Gender: Male

Severe left-convex thoracic scoliosis centered at T10.

Post-operative assessment following posterior spinal fixation with a growing rod system. This is a system with bilateral rods that can be manipulated in the clinic with a magnetic device allowing progressive lengthening.

Annotated image

The comparison view of initial and follow up imaging of the MAGEC system. The amount of lengthening can be assessed by x-ray, or by ultrasound. On the right (later) image, there is increased lucency above the wider portion of the right rod and caudal to the left rod.

Case Discussion

Growing systems do what they say - they allow growth. This can be a system that requires an operation to manipulate the rods, or a system like this where tiny progressive manipulations can allow growth.
