Nipple shadows

Case contributed by Dr Sebastian Tschauner

Presentation

Patient presented with cough and fever. A chest X-ray was performed to rule out pneumonia.

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female
Modality: X-ray

Frontal and lateral projections of the chest X-ray show no signs of pathology. Symmetric nodular opacities with a diameter of approximately 1 cm each are noted in the PA projection over both lower lung zones.

Modality: X-ray

Zoomed in, the opacities exhibit the typical x-ray appearance of bilateral nipple shadows on frontal and lateral projections.

Case Discussion

This case illustrates the typical appearance of nipple shadows that should not be confused with intrapulmonary nodules.
