Non-ossifying fibroma

Case contributed by Dr Erik Ranschaert

17-year old boy with painful ankle

Mixed lytic and sclerotic lesion with scharp lobulated contour and excentric location in the distal tibia, focal thinning of the cortex (anterior, see lateral view).

Case Discussion

The lesion is greater than 2 cm and therefore called a non-ossifying fibroma instead of fibrous cortical defect. There is cortical thinning and slight ballooning of the distal tibia, thus an increased risk of fracture warranting further therapy.
