Normal patella - secondary ossification center

Case contributed by Dr Jeremy Jones

Fall with injury to the knee. Pain and difficulty weightbearing.

Patient Data

Age: 8
Gender: Male

There is a small linear ossific density projected anterior to the patellar surface at the inferior pole. This is not a fracture, but represents a secondary ossification center.

Case Discussion

Don't be tempted to call this a fracture - it is a normal finding in the incompletely ossified patella in childhood. The clinical team confirmed that there was no tenderness over the inferior pole of the patella.
