Normal thymus on trauma CT

Case contributed by Dr Andrew Dixon

Car accident.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Female

Normal thymus within the anterior mediastinum in a 30yo female.

Case Discussion

In children and young adults it is important to be aware of the normal presence and appearance of the thymus in the anterior mediastinum superiorly. In the setting of trauma the mediastinal fat is a key check area for haemorrhage which may draw your attention to an aortic injury and therefore being able to differentiate haemorrhage from thymus is important.
