How to diagnose a cord around the neck?
On Gray scale:
- axial view: angulation of the probe starting from the bi-parietal view downwards: visualization of linear and circular coils of the cord around the fetal neck
- longitudinal view: confirms the diagnosis and assess number of loops
On color Doppler:
- applying color Doppler confirms the diagnosis and assess the number of cord loops around the fetal neck

One loop of the umbilical cord around the neck of the fetus.
Case Discussion
Random fetal movement is the primary cause of a nuchal cord. Other factors include an extra-long umbilical cord or excess amniotic fluid that allows more fetal movement that might increase the risk of the umbilical cord wrapping around a baby’s neck.
