Presentation

Left-sided colicky abdominal pain and hematuria.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

Obstructing 5 mm stone at the left VUJ with upstream ureteric dilatation and mild left PC system dilatation.

This annotated version of the CT above shows the path of the ureter (white circles). The red circle shows the obstructing stone protruding into the urinary bladder from the left VUJ.

Case Discussion

The ureters descend on the anteromedial aspect of the psoas muscles into the pelvis, and then anterior to the internal iliac vessels until the ischial spine where they run anteromedially for a short distance before entering the urinary bladder.
