Obstructive distal ureteric calculus

Abdominal ultrasound shows an echogenic focus in the distal ureter with posterior acoustic shadowing and causing proximal dilatation suggestive of calculus.
Case Discussion
Renal and ureteric calculi are the frequent causes of emergency department visits. Symptoms arise when they are impacted in pelvis or ureter and cause obstruction leading to hydronephrosis and/or hydroureter. Stones measuring up to 5 mm easily pass through the urinary tract without intervention by improving hydration. Stones measuring more than 5 mm are more difficult to pass - they often require surgical intervention.
