Right hip pain and tenderness.

Patient Data

Age: 95 years
Gender: Female

Right sided obturator hernia containing a small bowel loop superficial to the right obturator externus muscle and deep to the pectineus muscle within the obturator foramen. No complication of small bowel obstruction or strangulation. Other findings including right basal pleural effusion, large left sided renal cysts, atherosclerotic infra-renal abdominal aortic aneurysm and calcified gallstones.

Case Discussion

Uncomplicated herniation of a small bowel loop through the right obturator foramen. The loop lies superficial to the right obturator externus muscle and deep to the right pectineus muscle. The possible complication of this herniation is strangulation leading to small bowel obstruction and then bowel ischemia.
