Occult breast carcinoma

Case contributed by Garth Kruger
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Palpable mass 10 o'clock left breast

Patient Data

Gender: Female
ultrasound

Multilobulated, hypoechoic lesion with angular margins and posterior shadowing.

Case Discussion

The ultrasound image shows a very alarming solid mass that has all the sonographic criteria of a sinister solid breast mass in an older patient. Normal mammogram.

Up to 10 % of breast cancers are mammographically occult. Even with that wonderful instrument called the retrospectoscope. Which is why we ultrasound palpable lesions. This cancer was completely invisible on all mammogram images.
