Oesophageal duplication cyst

Case contributed by Michael P Hartung
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Chest fullness and difficulty swallowing.

Patient Data

Age: 35
Gender: Female
x-ray

Subtle rounded subcarinal density projects over the spine. Otherwise, normal.

Round, low-attenuation subcarinal mass. It compresses or arises from the oesophagus.

Fluoroscopy

Barium esophagram demonstrates oval mass compressing the oesophageal lumen, likely intramural in location.

mri

Oval subcarinal mass with fluid-fluid level, centred on the oesophagus.

Case Discussion

Pathology-proven oesophageal duplication cyst. Imaging findings are demonstrated on multiple modalities. Oesophageal duplication cysts can be adjacent to or within the wall. They can contain ectopic gastric mucosa, which can result in haemorrhage (possibly accounting for fluid-fluid level in this case).
