Esophageal duplication cyst

Case contributed by Stefan Tigges
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Chest pain.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

Right paratracheal mass, otherwise normal chest x-ray.

ct

Low density right paratracheal mass, calcified left lower lobe granuloma, otherwise normal CT chest.

Case Discussion

The mass was resected and proved to be an esophageal duplication cyst. Using the International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group (ITMIG) classification of mediastinal masses (see reference below), this mass was in the visceral compartment (née middle mediastinum) where duplication cysts are common. Another common cause of a mass in this compartment is adenopathy, but since the lesion was of low density, a cyst is more likely.
