Esophageal malignant stricture - barium study

Case contributed by Mohammad Taghi Niknejad
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Work up for dysphagia.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Male

A 4 cm segmental narrowing with an irregular margin and shouldering appearance at the distal half of the esophagus suggests tumoral infiltration.

Evidence of prior sternotomy is noted.

Case Discussion

The patient went to have an endoscopy and biopsy, and the histopathology evaluation confirmed distal esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Focal or segmental strictures with shouldering appearance and irregular margins on the GI tract barium study are highly indicative of malignant tumoral lesions, and further endoscopy and biopsy are needed.
