Esophageal perforation

Middle aged man with history of fish bone swallowing and dysphagia with odynophagia.

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Male

Multiple air pockets with air fluid levels noted, extending from superior mediastinum down to the diaphragm suggestive of pneumomediastinum. There is a large amount of fluid noted in the right pleural cavity with air-fluid level suggestive of hydropneumothorax. The right lung shows basal atelectasis.


Follow up scan, taken 24 hours after the primary scan shows:

Chest tube and nasogastric tube in situ. Significant improvement of hydropneumothorax and pneumomediastinum.
