Oesophageal stent

Case contributed by Dr Ian Bickle

Elderly patient attends with shortness of breath. Know oesophageal malignancy.

Patient Data

Age: 79
Gender: Female

An oesophageal stent traverses the gastro-oesophageal junction.

Hyperinflated lungs in keeping with COPD.

The appearances of the lungs and oesophageal stent for malignancy are both likely the outcome of the same cause - smoking.

Case Discussion

A covered oesophageal stent is observed traversing the GOJ.

Oesophageal stents are almost exclusively deployed for symptomatic benefit for a malignant stricture, typically in the distal oesophagus.

The stent may be placed endoscopically or by an interventionally radiologist under fluroscopic guidance.
