Olecranon bursitis

Case contributed by Dennis Odhiambo Agolah
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Chronic recurrent right posterior elbow joint swelling. Previous needle aspirations yielded suppurative fluid content and neutrophils.

Patient Data

Age: 50 Years
Gender: Male
ultrasound

Grey scale and color Doppler modes with high resolution linear sector array probe used to systematically examine the right posterior elbow joint:

An approximate 21 ml of densely low to mid echo reflectivity fluid content littered intrinsically with hyperechoic loose bodies of sub-centimeter diameters, is noted at the posterior elbow joint mostly surrounding the olecranon process expanding the right olecranon bursa. Color Doppler flow around the olecranon exhibit mild increased vascular signals along the cartilaginous surface.

Case Discussion

Pictograms most intent for recurrent right olecranon bursitis with ipsilateral olecranon cartilaginous surface and peripherally floating loose bodies. With the presenting clinical history coupled with the age bracket and the loosely floating foci aforementioned, rheumatoid or osteoarthritis may not be excluded entirely since no previous history of trauma (that could have suggested elbow fractured fragments) was present.
