Case Discussion

Pathology report: Esthesioneuroblastoma (olfactory neuroblastoma involving respiratory mucosa with extensive necrosis involving dense fibrous tissue.

This specimen shows nest sheets of a neuroendocrine tumor involving respiratory mucosa, bone and dense fibrous tissue. The tumor is associated wtih extensive areas of necrosis and chronic inflammation with atypia, possibly related to the reported history of radiation therapy. A immunohistochemical stain for synaptophysin is positive in the tumour cells. The findings are consistent with the diagnosis of esthesioneuroblastoma (olfactory neuroblastoma)
