Open book pelvic injury

Case contributed by Dr Henry Knipe

Motor vehicle collision.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

Widening and malalignment of the pubic symphysis. Soft tissue attenuates the sacro-iliac joints, and these are difficult to assess. Pelvic binder in situ.

Widening and malalignment of the pubic symphysis and left sacro-iliac joint compatible with an open book injury. No fracture identified.

Case Discussion

This case is an example of an open book injury from anteroposterior compression without fracture - the force of the injury has traveled through, and disrupted, the left sacro-iliac joint.
