Patient referred by GP after presenting with a painful eye, photophobia and impaired vision.

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female

MRI demonstrates an increased signal in the left optic nerve for a length of approximately 1 cm in the intraorbital region of the optic nerve, consistent with the features of focal neuritis of the left optic nerve with secondary atrophic changes.

Case Discussion

Optic neuritis is a relatively common symptom or manifestation of the inflammation of the central nervous system, which is frequently associated with multiple sclerosis. Long term complications can include optic nerve damage and atrophy.
