Presentation

A soft tissue growth left superior medial orbit

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Female

There is a left medial preseptal mass overlying the lacrimal bone. Anteriorly, the mass infiltrates the skin and the subcutaneous tissue. Inferiorly, the lesion extends to the left lacrimal sac. Posteriorly, the lesion infiltrates the orbital septum. There is focal dehiscence of the underlying lacrimal bone with a small soft tissue density extending into the left anterior ethmoidal air cells (see key image). The lesion measures 2.0 x 1.5 x 1.0 cm its maximum dimensions.

Case Discussion

Pathologically proven squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) arising in the preseptal soft tissue and invading the orbital septum and the underlying lacrimal bone.

Tumors in the preseptal area arise from the nasolacrimal apparatus, the conjunctiva, the adjacent facial skin or structures of the eyelids. These are almost always carcinomas of cutaneous, adnexa or glandular origin.
